Kenya and Somalia have recently entered into a bilateral agreement regarding air services, providing a significant boost to Kenya Airways, which has been eager to initiate flights to Somalia. Kipchumba Murkomen, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, announced that this accord effectively allows direct flights between the two countries by “opening up” their airspaces.

Murkomen clarified that this arrangement entails the designation of airlines for flights between Mogadishu and Nairobi, with further designations to be determined by the relevant ministries in each country. This milestone, commemorated through the signing of the agreement with his Somalian counterpart, not only benefits Kenya Airways but also creates opportunities for other airlines.

Importantly, Murkomen emphasized that Kenya Airways will no longer need to seek air transport approvals from the ministry, streamlining their operational processes. Furthermore, this agreement fosters collaboration between Kenya and Somalia in terms of safety and security within their respective airspaces.

He added that this accord aligns their operations with the standards outlined by the International Civil Aviation Authority and the Chicago Convention, which governs the utilization of airspace and defines the relationship between nations.

It’s worth noting that Kenya Airways had postponed its plans to introduce flights to Hargeisa in Somaliland back in May 2021 due to perceived obstacles in obtaining the necessary clearances and approvals. The airline clarified that, contrary to rumors circulating on social media, it currently has no operational flights.
